Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Players will gain the ability to contest particular decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
